Message From the President

Dear American Indian Graduate Center Friends, Alumni and Supporters,

It is an honor to be assuming the role of President of the Board of Directors for the American Indian Graduate Center.  I am enthusiastic to serve a national organization that served me so capably as I worked to complete my MBA at the University of New Mexico.  I step into this position understanding first hand the value of AIGC as a resource to many Native American students striving for a better tomorrow through education.

The Center is well known for its graduate fellowships and scholarships, but just as important, there are many opportunities for undergraduate students to receive financial assistance.  In 2001 AIGC Scholars was incorporated as the administrator of the Gates Millennium Scholar Program for the American Indian and Alaska Native population.  With funding from the Gates Program, AIGC Scholars is able to award undergraduate scholarships annually to students that have demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership roles, and community involvement.  Also, AIGC teams with Wells Fargo and Accenture to award undergraduate (and graduate) scholarships.

With our commitment to our future leaders from our Indian communities, it is critical that alumni join in supporting the organization’s efforts.  You may ask, “How can I make a difference?”  One of the primary focuses during my term will be to reach out to AIGC alumni and friends and ask them to give a little something back AIGC, whether the investment is in the form of time, financial contributions, mentoring, or simply spreading the word on the outstanding opportunities AIGC offers.    If you have not already shared your contact information with us, please complete the simple online form and let us know how you would like to be involved.  Together, let us fulfill AIGC’s mission to build, promote, and honor self-sustaining American Indian and Alaska Native communities through education and leadership.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the outgoing Board President, Elizabeth Rodke Washburn, for all her hard work and notable contributions during her term.   I look forward to working with the AIGC Board and staff to make this an enjoyable and productive year.

Best Regards,

David Mahooty, Pueblo of Zuni
AIGC Board President
