Winona Elliott Sample Memorial Fund: For Native American graduate students pursuing degrees in education and early childhood.
Winona Elliot Sample (1917-2008), was born on the Red Lake Chippewa reservation in Minnesota. The memorial fund was created to honor Winona's internationally
renowned work in early childhood care and education and for her dedication to, knowledge of, and leadership in improving the quality of education of Indian children. Winona's
numerous accomplishments illustrated her vision and commitment as an advocate for children and for Indian communities and the preservation of their cultural heritage. One of her most
noted achievements was being selected vice chair of the U.S. National Commission on the International Year of the Child (1979-1980).
AIGC is honored to have been selected as the steward for this fund. Strong early childhood education develops strong American Indian graduate students who will strengthen Indian country.
Winona said it best: "We need to observe and think about everything we do with young children. Every time you are talking to a child you are teaching." (Child Care Information Exchange, January/February 1995)
