The VISTA internship is part of the federal Americorps program. This intern position is assigned to the Sand Creek Massacre Foundation, a non-profit organization which supports the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Kiowa County, Colorado. The VISTA’s duties will include but are not limited to: 1) Gain a basic knowledge and understanding of the Sand Creek Massacre, its history and significance and the role it continues to play in the lives of the Cheyenne and Arapaho people, 2) Support the curator at the national historic site to inventory and organize existing archival collections in the Center for Sand Creek Massacre Studies (Study Center) within the national historic site, 3) Support the curator/staff of the national historic site in researching and identifying archival collections related to the Sand Creek Massacre 4) Support the Foundation Board of Directors, 5) Create content and update the Foundation website and social media platforms 6) Create promotional materials (brochures, flyers, press releases), 8) Identify and write grant proposals for the Foundation, 9) Assist national historic site staff with organization and implementation of planning processes for developing the Study Center, 10) Contact institutions holding collections related to the Sand Creek Massacre to help determine what kind of formats they are in and how they might be acquired for inclusion in the Study Center.
